The short answer
What Goodwill secrets should seniors and resellers know?
Every local Goodwill sets its own rules, so check your region's website first. Some run color-tag sales (North Georgia: 50% off in week four) and senior days (Chesapeake: 30% off Wednesdays at 55 and up). Before buying to resell, check eBay sold prices: Griswold No. 8 skillets sold for $60 and $178 on Oct 25, 2026.
- Goodwill is a network of 150 local nonprofits with more than 3,400 stores and outlets in the U.S. and Canada, so discounts and return rules change by region.
- Goodwill of North Georgia rotates tag colors every five weeks: the week-four color is 50% off, then 99 cents the following Monday, for one day only.
- Senior days differ: 30% off Wednesdays at 55+ (Chesapeake), 20% at 60+ for rewards members (Middle Tennessee), 10% at 55+ (Dayton area); Milwaukee and Chicago ended theirs on Jan 1, 2025.
- Old labels are the ones that pay: a 1960s Pendleton loop-collar shirt sold for $188.50 on Oct 24, 2026, while most mall-brand cashmere sold for $18-$35.
- Test before you pay: a for-parts Olympus Stylus Epic sold for $100, while most working ones sold for $375-$600 (Oct 14-25, 2026).
Chapters (15)
Goodwill isn't one company with one rulebook, and once you know that, the store starts to make sense. Here are 12 things worth knowing before your next trip, each checked on Oct 26, 2026 against a regional Goodwill's own website or a news or government source, plus the eBay sold prices that show which finds actually pay.
Is every Goodwill run the same way?
No. Goodwill's own site says it supports a network of 150 local Goodwill organizations, with more than 3,400 stores and outlets in the U.S. and Canada. Each local Goodwill is its own nonprofit, so the sales, the discounts and the return rules change from one region to the next.
Some even run their own eBay stores: Goodwill of Northeast Indiana links two from its website.
So the first move is free: look up your local Goodwill's website, not the national one. That's where your region's rules are.

What do Goodwill tag colors mean?
At several Goodwills, the tag color tells the staff how long an item has been on the floor, and it decides when the price drops. Goodwill of North Georgia says it rotates stock every five weeks, with red, yellow, green, blue and orange tags. In week four, that color is 50% off. If it still doesn't sell, the following Monday it drops to 99 cents, for one day only.
Check your region before you count on it:
- Since Jan 1, 2025, Goodwill of Greater Washington (the D.C. area) gives its color-of-the-week discount only to members of its free Rewards Club.
- Goodwill's stores in Milwaukee and Chicago ended their tag sales altogether on Jan 1, 2025, according to CBS 58.

Which Goodwills have a senior discount day?
Some do, but the day, the discount and the age change by region, and a few regions have dropped it. Here's where four regions stood on Oct 26, 2026:
| Goodwill region | Day | Discount | Age | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goodwill of the Chesapeake (Baltimore area) | Every Wednesday | 30% off | 55 and up | Proof of ID; can't be combined with other offers |
| Goodwill of Middle Tennessee | Wednesdays | 20% off regular-price items | 60 and up | True Blue Rewards members only, since Jan 1, 2025 |
| Goodwill Easterseals Miami Valley (Dayton, Ohio) | Every Wednesday | 10% off the entire purchase | 55 and up | None listed |
| Milwaukee and Chicago | None | Ended Jan 1, 2025 | n/a | Reported by CBS 58 |
Bring your ID. And where the senior discount can't be combined with other offers, spend it on the full-price items, not the things already on sale.

Is a Goodwill rewards club worth joining?
If your Goodwill has one, it's worth asking about, because since 2025 some regions tie their best deals to signing up. At Goodwill of the Chesapeake, Club Goodwill gives you one point for every dollar you spend on donated goods, and 100 points gets you $10 off. Goodwill of Middle Tennessee's True Blue Rewards takes $5 off your next purchase of $25 or more when you join.
Not every Goodwill has one. Asked whether all Goodwills have rewards programs, Middle Tennessee's own FAQ answers: "No. In fact, we are one of few." So ask at the register.

Does Goodwill price clothes by brand?
Not always. Some Goodwills price from a standard list: Goodwill of Northeast Indiana says its clothing is priced consistently from store to store, and Ohio Valley Goodwill says its prices are standardized. So a great label can end up priced like a plain one. That's your opening. Shop with your hands first, then read the label.
Be honest about what a label is worth, though. Plain mall-brand cashmere doesn't bring much; the labels that pay are the old ones. Used, on eBay:
| Item | Sold for | Most sold for | Sold | What to look for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Talbots cashmere sweater | $35 | $18-$35 for mall-brand cashmere (12 of 18 sales, Oct 25-26) | Oct 26, 2026 | 100% cashmere; mall brands stay modest |
| Pendleton wool board shirt, plaid | $42 | $28-$65 (12 of 15 sales, Oct 23-25) | Oct 25, 2026 | Plain vintage Pendleton |
| 1960s Pendleton loop-collar shirt | $188.50 (auction, 6 bids) | $90-$190 for 1960s loop collars | Oct 24, 2026 | The loop collar |
| Vintage Coach Basic Bag, made in USA | $110 | $75-$300 (18 of 21 sales, Oct 16-24) | Oct 24, 2026 | The leather patch inside that says where it was made |
| Vintage Coach Court bag, jade green | $500 | $300-$500 for jade, City and Court bags | Oct 24, 2026 | Model and color |
Which Goodwill housewares sell on eBay?
Heavy ones. In housewares, pick it up. A Griswold No. 8 cast iron skillet, made in Erie, Pennsylvania, sells by the logo on the bottom. Le Creuset and Pyrex Butterprint showed up in the sold listings too.
| Item | Sold for | Most sold for | Sold | What to look for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Griswold No. 8 skillet, small logo | $60 | $47-$105 (10 of 14 sales, Oct 22-26) | Oct 25, 2026 | Small logo on the bottom |
| Griswold No. 8 skillet, large block logo | $104 (auction, 17 bids) | $47-$105 | Oct 26, 2026 | Large block logo |
| Griswold No. 8 skillet, slant Erie logo | $178 | $129-$178 for slant and large logos | Oct 25, 2026 | Slant logo |
| Le Creuset Dutch oven, 5.5 qt | $149.99 | $95-$200 for 4.5-5.5 qt (9 of 12 sales, Oct 5-25) | Oct 21, 2026 | Signature line, 5.5 qt |
| Le Creuset Dutch oven, 5.5 qt, white | $199 | $95-$200 | Oct 22, 2026 | Same size, light color |
| Pyrex Butterprint single bowl | $34.99 and $58 | $25-$70 (18 of 19 sales, Oct 22-25) | Oct 24, 2026 | The Butterprint pattern |
| Pyrex Butterprint set of 4 | $274.99 (one sale) | n/a | Oct 22, 2026 | A full matching set |
Heavy items cost a lot to ship, so use calculated shipping. Once you've found one, EasyFlip writes the eBay listing from a few photos, including a suggested price, and you check it and publish.
What does Goodwill pull for ShopGoodwill.com?
Some of the best donations never reach the shelf: staff pull them for ShopGoodwill.com, Goodwill's own online auction. It started in 1999, it's run by Goodwill of Orange County, California, and more than 135 Goodwill organizations list on it. Goodwill of Middle Tennessee says the items it puts online are only about 1% of its donations.
In 2021, an employee at a Goodwill in Hanover, Pennsylvania spotted 27 sealed Nintendo games. Bidding started at $9.99. Eight days and 143 bidders later, they sold for $30,002 (Goodwill Keystone Area, July 21, 2021).
You can shop that site too; just check the shipping before you bid.
Why should you check the back of a thrift store painting?
Because the label on the back can name the artist. In 2012, an artist named Beth Feeback bought a painting at a Goodwill near Greensboro, North Carolina, for $9.99, planning to paint over it. A label on the back named the artist, Ilya Bolotowsky, and a gallery at UNC Greensboro. It sold at Sotheby's for $34,375, with the buyer's premium.
In 2006, a watercolor left at a Portland, Oregon Goodwill started at $10 in an online auction. It turned out to be a Frank Weston Benson, and it sold for $165,002.
Finds like that are rare. But flipping a frame over takes two seconds.

How can you tell valuable Trifari jewelry?
Turn it over: Trifari pieces carry a tiny crown over the letter T, but the name alone isn't the money. The money is the Jelly Belly, the pin with a clear lucite belly.
| Item | Sold for | Most sold for | Sold | What to look for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plain signed Trifari leaf pin | $5 (auction, 5 bids) | $5-$30 for plain crown-Trifari pins | Oct 24, 2026 | Signed, but no lucite |
| Plain signed Trifari holly leaf pin | $25 | $5-$30 | Oct 24, 2026 | Signed, but no lucite |
| Trifari Jelly Belly hummingbird | $198.50 (auction, 24 bids) | $85-$350 for Jelly Bellies (17 of 21 sales, Sep 25-Oct 24) | Oct 15, 2026 | Clear lucite belly |
| Trifari sterling Jelly Belly sailfish | $312 (auction, 40 bids) | $85-$350 | Oct 17, 2026 | Sterling silver Jelly Belly |
| Trifari Jelly Belly Pekingese | $1,526 (auction, 37 bids; one sale) | n/a | Oct 15, 2026 | Rare design |
Can you return things to Goodwill?
Sometimes, but the rules vary a lot, so test it before you pay. Three regions' pages:
| Goodwill region | What you can return | Window | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goodwill of the Chesapeake | Clothing and electronics | 7 days | Store credit only |
| Goodwill of Northeast Indiana | Tagged items with the receipt (no phones, books or "as is" items) | 14 days | In-store credit only |
| Ohio Valley Goodwill | Clothing only, not sale items, with the receipt | 10 days | In-store credit |
So plug it in, and keep a couple of batteries in your pocket. Here's why it matters:
| Item | Not working / for parts | Working, most sold for |
|---|---|---|
| Olympus Stylus Epic film camera | $100, for parts (sold Oct 23, 2026) | $375-$600 (9 of 13 sales, Oct 14-25, 2026) |
| Sony Walkman | $19, not working (sold Oct 24, 2026) | $40-$70 (15 of 16 sales, Oct 24-25, 2026) |
If you resell, check SaferProducts.gov first. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says resellers "cannot knowingly sell" products that don't meet the requirements of the law, and it tells them to "review the list of recalled products before taking a product into inventory or selling it."

How do the Goodwill Outlet bins work?
In some regions, what doesn't sell in the stores goes to a Goodwill Outlet, where you pay by the pound. Ohio Valley Goodwill, around Cincinnati, sells clothing there for $1.89 a pound, and it says clothing that doesn't sell at the outlet goes to recycling. At Goodwill of Middle Tennessee's outlet, you wait behind a yellow line until an employee gives the signal.
The bins can surprise you, too. Earlier this year, Quinn Brown, a young reseller, paid $3.07 for a jacket at the Hillsboro Goodwill Outlet in Oregon. It was authenticated as a warmup jacket Wilt Chamberlain wore in the 1972 NBA Finals, and it sold at Sotheby's for $89,600 on July 20, 2026 (KPTV, KATU). That's one rare find, not a typical day at the bins.
How do you check what something sold for on eBay?
Search the item on eBay, then turn on the Sold filter, and go by what it sold for, not what people are asking. The same aisle can hold very different money.
| Item | Sold for | Most sold for | Sold | What to look for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii), used, complete | $110 | $105-$150 (14 of 19 sales, Oct 1-22) | Oct 19, 2026 | Complete in box |
| Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii), sealed | $211.99 | $200-$220 for sealed copies | Oct 17, 2026 | Factory seal |
| Wii Sports Resort, complete in box | $29.95 | n/a | Oct 26, 2026 | A common game |
| Hot Wheels Redline, loose, original paint (1968 Hot Heap) | $24.50 (auction, 15 bids) | $10-$35 (10 of 13 sales, Oct 5-25) | Oct 18, 2026 | Loose, original paint |
| 1970 Hot Wheels Seasider, blue | $356.99 (auction, 34 bids; one sale) | n/a | Oct 23, 2026 | Rare color |
| Fire-King Jadeite D-handle mug | $11.50 (auction, 5 bids) | $10-$20 for plain mugs (6 of 9 sales, Oct 21-25) | Oct 22, 2026 | Plain is common |
| Jadeite Band Box Hamburgers advertising mug | $125 (one sale) | n/a | Oct 22, 2026 | An old restaurant's name printed on it |
Do clothing donations count for the 2026 tax deduction?
No. Starting with tax year 2026, people who don't itemize can deduct up to $1,000 of cash gifts to charity, or $2,000 for married couples filing jointly. But the IRS says noncash contributions, such as clothing, do not qualify. This isn't tax advice, so check with a tax pro.
The bottom line
Before your next trip, spend five minutes on your own Goodwill's website: find the tag color of the week, the senior day (and whether it needs a rewards membership), and the return rules. In the store, shop by the label and by the weight, flip every frame, check the back of the jewelry, and test anything with a plug. Then look up the sold price before you pay to resell it.
If you want what's selling each week in your inbox, the Easy Flip newsletter goes out every Monday.
Questions people ask
Does Goodwill have a senior discount day?
Some regions do, but the rules differ. Goodwill of the Chesapeake gives 30% off every Wednesday at 55 and up, Middle Tennessee gives 20% off regular-price items on Wednesdays at 60 and up for True Blue Rewards members, and the Dayton-area Goodwill gives 10% on Wednesdays at 55 and up. Milwaukee and Chicago ended senior discounts on Jan 1, 2025.
What does the Goodwill color of the week mean?
At several Goodwills, the tag color shows how long an item has been on the floor. Goodwill of North Georgia rotates five colors over five weeks, takes 50% off the week-four color, and drops unsold items to 99 cents the following Monday for one day. Some regions limit it to rewards members or have ended tag sales.
Can you return items to Goodwill?
It depends on the region. Goodwill of the Chesapeake takes back clothing and electronics within 7 days for store credit, Northeast Indiana allows 14 days for in-store credit with the receipt, and Ohio Valley takes back clothing only, within 10 days. Test anything electronic before you pay.
How much does a Griswold No. 8 skillet sell for on eBay?
Most used Griswold No. 8 skillets sold for $47-$105 on eBay between Oct 22 and 26, 2026. The logo matters: a small-logo one sold for $60, a large block logo for $104 at auction, and a slant Erie logo for $178.
Do clothing donations count for the 2026 non-itemizer tax deduction?
No. Starting with tax year 2026, people who don't itemize can deduct up to $1,000 of cash gifts to charity ($2,000 for married couples filing jointly), but the IRS says noncash contributions such as clothing do not qualify. Check with a tax pro.
What is ShopGoodwill.com?
ShopGoodwill.com is Goodwill's own online auction. It started in 1999, is run by Goodwill of Orange County, California, and more than 135 Goodwill organizations list items on it, often donations staff pull before they reach the shelf.

At Goodwills from Georgia to Indiana, there's a tag color that cuts the price in half, and it changes every week. At some of them, there's a day of the week set aside for shoppers fifty-five and up. And earlier this year, a young reseller paid three dollars and seven cents for a jacket in the Goodwill bins. It sold at Sotheby's for eighty-nine thousand, six hundred dollars. So today: twelve Goodwill secrets every senior should know before the next trip. Every one checked against Goodwill's own pages or the news reports, and where it turns into money on eBay, real sold prices. Let's jump right into it.
Secret number one. There's no such thing as one Goodwill. Goodwill's own site says it supports a network of a hundred fifty local Goodwill organizations, with more than thirty-four hundred stores and outlets in the U-S and Canada. Each local Goodwill is its own nonprofit, so the sales, the discounts and the return rules change from one region to the next. One of them even links its own eBay stores from its website. So the first move is free: look up your local Goodwill's website, not the national one. That's where your region's rules are. Secret number two. That tag color isn't random. At several Goodwills, it tells the staff how long an item has been on the floor. Goodwill of North Georgia says it rotates stock every five weeks, with red, yellow, green, blue and orange tags. In week four, that color is fifty percent off. And if it still doesn't sell, the following Monday it drops to ninety-nine cents, for one day only. But check your region. Since January twenty twenty-five, the Goodwill around Washington, D-C gives its color-of-the-week discount only to members of its free rewards club. And Goodwill's stores in Milwaukee and Chicago ended their tag sales altogether. Secret number three: senior day. Same idea, totally different rules. Goodwill of the Chesapeake, around Baltimore: every Wednesday, thirty percent off for shoppers fifty-five and up. Middle Tennessee: Wednesdays, twenty percent off regular-price items at sixty and up, and since twenty twenty-five you have to be in its rewards program. Around Dayton, Ohio, it's ten percent on Wednesdays at fifty-five. And in Milwaukee and Chicago? It's gone. So bring your ID. And at some stores the senior discount can't be combined with other offers, so spend it on the full-price stuff, not the things already on sale.
Quick thing before we keep going. If you've got a pile of stuff waiting to be listed, that's exactly why I built EasyFlip. Snap a few photos and it writes the whole eBay listing for you: title, description, item specifics, the category, even a price. You check it, tap publish, done. Link's down below.
Secret number four: the rewards club. Since twenty twenty-five, some Goodwills tie their best deals to signing up. At Goodwill of the Chesapeake, Club Goodwill gives you a point for every dollar you spend on donated goods, and a hundred points gets you ten dollars off. Middle Tennessee's True Blue Rewards takes five dollars off your next purchase of twenty-five or more when you join. Not every Goodwill has one, so ask at the register. Secret number five. Some Goodwills price from a standard list. Goodwill of Northeast Indiana says its clothing is priced consistently from store to store, and Ohio Valley Goodwill says its prices are standardized. So a great label can end up priced like a plain one. That's your opening. Shop with your hands first, then read the label. But be honest about what it's worth. A plain mall-brand cashmere sweater isn't a jackpot. On eBay, most sold for about eighteen to thirty-five dollars on October twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth. A Talbots one went for thirty-five. The labels that pay are the old ones. A plain vintage Pendleton wool shirt sold for forty-two. A nineteen-sixties loop-collar Pendleton went for a hundred eighty-eight fifty at auction. And an old Coach bag with the leather patch inside that says where it was made? A basic one sold for a hundred ten. A jade green Court bag, five hundred. Secret number six: heavy beats pretty. In housewares, pick it up. Take a Griswold number eight cast iron skillet, made in Erie, Pennsylvania, and look at the logo on the bottom. A small-logo one sold for sixty. A large block logo pulled seventeen bids, to a hundred four. And a slant-logo one sold for a hundred seventy-eight. All between October twenty-fourth and twenty-sixth. A used Le Creuset Dutch oven, five and a half quarts, sold for a hundred forty-nine ninety-nine, and a white one for a hundred ninety-nine. Pyrex in the Butterprint pattern: single bowls sold for thirty-four ninety-nine and fifty-eight. A full set of four went for two seventy-four ninety-nine, and that's one sale. Heavy stuff costs a lot to ship, so use calculated shipping.
Secret number seven. Some of the best donations never reach the shelf. Staff pull them for ShopGoodwill dot com, Goodwill's own online auction. It started in nineteen ninety-nine, it's run by Goodwill of Orange County, California, and more than a hundred thirty-five Goodwills list on it. Middle Tennessee says the items it puts online are only about one percent of its donations. In twenty twenty-one, an employee at a Goodwill in Hanover, Pennsylvania spotted twenty-seven sealed Nintendo games. The bidding started at nine ninety-nine. Eight days and a hundred forty-three bidders later: thirty thousand and two dollars. And you can shop that site too. Just check the shipping before you bid. Secret number eight: turn every frame around. In twenty twelve, an artist named Beth Feeback bought a painting at a Goodwill near Greensboro, North Carolina, for nine ninety-nine. She planned to paint over it. Then she checked the back. A label named the artist, Ilya Bolotowsky, and a gallery at U-N-C Greensboro. It sold at Sotheby's for thirty-four thousand, three hundred seventy-five dollars, with the buyer's premium. And in two thousand six, a watercolor left at a Portland, Oregon Goodwill started at ten dollars online. It turned out to be a Frank Weston Benson, and it sold for a hundred sixty-five thousand and two dollars. Finds like that are rare. But flipping a frame over takes two seconds. Secret number nine: the back of the jewelry tells you more than the front. Take Trifari. Look for a tiny crown over the letter T. But the name alone isn't the money. Plain signed Trifari pins sold for five and twenty-five dollars on October twenty-fourth. The money is the Jelly Belly, the one with a clear lucite belly. A hummingbird sold for a hundred ninety-eight fifty. A sterling sailfish pulled forty bids, to three hundred twelve. And one rare Pekingese went for fifteen hundred twenty-six. That's one sale, not a normal price.
Secret number ten: test it before you pay, because returns vary a lot. Goodwill of the Chesapeake takes clothing and electronics back within seven days, for store credit only. Northeast Indiana gives you fourteen days, store credit. Ohio Valley takes back clothing only. So plug it in, and keep a couple of batteries in your pocket. Here's why. An Olympus Stylus Epic film camera, sold for parts? A hundred dollars. Working ones mostly sold for about three seventy-five to six hundred. A Sony Walkman that didn't work sold for nineteen. Most working ones went for about forty to seventy. And if you resell, check SaferProducts dot gov first. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says resellers can't knowingly sell products that don't meet the law, and it tells them to check the recall list before they sell. Secret number eleven: the bins. In some regions, what doesn't sell in the stores goes to a Goodwill Outlet. Ohio Valley Goodwill, around Cincinnati, sells clothing there by the pound, a dollar eighty-nine a pound. In Middle Tennessee, you wait behind a yellow line until an employee gives the signal. And Ohio Valley says clothing that doesn't sell there goes to recycling. Remember that jacket? Earlier this year, Quinn Brown, a young reseller, found it at the Hillsboro Goodwill Outlet in Oregon and paid three dollars and seven cents. It was authenticated as a warmup jacket Wilt Chamberlain wore in the nineteen seventy-two N-B-A Finals, and it sold at Sotheby's for eighty-nine thousand, six hundred dollars. Secret number twelve, and it might save you the most money. Before you buy to resell, look up what it sold for, not what people are asking. On eBay, search the item, then turn on the Sold filter. Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Wii gets hyped a lot. Most complete used copies sold for about a hundred five to a hundred fifty. Only sealed ones cleared two hundred. And Wii Sports Resort, complete in the box? Twenty-nine ninety-five. Old Hot Wheels Redlines: most loose, original-paint ones sold for about ten to thirty-five dollars. A rare blue Seasider went for three fifty-six ninety-nine, and that's one sale. And a plain Jadeite mug sold for eleven fifty. One with an old burger shop's name on it? A hundred twenty-five. That's one sale too. Same aisle. Very different money.
So, the recap. Look up your own Goodwill's rules. Learn the tag color. Find senior day, and join the rewards club. Shop by the label and by the weight. Flip the frames, check the jewelry backs, test it, try the bins, and look up sold before you buy. One more thing for donors. Starting in twenty twenty-six, people who don't itemize can deduct up to a thousand dollars of cash gifts to charity, or two thousand for married couples filing jointly. But the I-R-S says clothing and other non-cash donations don't qualify. So check with a tax pro. So tell me: which one of these twelve surprised you the most, or which one does your Goodwill do differently? Drop it in the comments. If this was useful, a like helps it find more resellers. Have a blessed day.
