What does a $10 sale on eBay actually keep?

About a dollar, if you offer free shipping on a small package. On a $10 item with free shipping, eBay takes $1.36 (13.6%) plus the $0.30 per-order fee, so $8.34 reaches you. A USPS Ground Advantage label at the published commercial price for zone 1 ($7.33, effective Oct 4, 2026) leaves $1.01 before you've paid anything for the item.

That's why cheap items work better bundled into lots, shipped in an eBay Standard Envelope when they qualify, or priced with calculated shipping. We broke down all four fixes in 11 cheap-to-ship thrift finds that sell on eBay.

How to use the calculator

  • Sold price is the item price alone. Put what the buyer paid for shipping in its own box (0 for free shipping).
  • Shipping label cost is what you paid for the label. eBay Labels and Pirate Ship are usually below the published USPS prices, so use your real label cost when you have it.
  • Buyer's sales tax changes the fee a little, because eBay's percentage includes the tax. Leave it at 0 for a quick estimate.
  • Break-even price is the lowest price that covers every fee and cost. The target box tells you the price that clears the profit you want.

Questions people ask

How much does eBay take from a sale?

For most categories eBay takes 13.6% of the total sale (item price, shipping the buyer paid and sales tax) up to $7,500, plus a per-order fee of $0.40, or $0.30 when the order is $10 or less. That's eBay's rate for sellers without a Store subscription as of October 29, 2026.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, and that total includes the shipping the buyer paid and the sales tax. If you offer free shipping, the fee is on the item price (plus tax) and the label comes out of your side.

Does eBay charge fees on sales tax?

Yes. eBay collects the sales tax and sends it to the state, but its final value fee is still calculated on the total amount including the tax. That's why the calculator asks for the buyer's tax rate.

Which eBay categories have lower fees?

Sneakers over $150 are 8% with no per-order fee, guitars and basses are 6.7%, and trading cards are 13.25%. Books, movies and music (except vinyl) are higher at 15.3%, and jewelry and handbags are 15% below their price thresholds.

Is it free to list on eBay?

For most casual sellers, yes: you get 250 free listings a month, and each listing after that costs $0.35. You only pay the final value fee when the item sells.
