The short answer
How do I set up an eBay photography station for clothing?
When I made this video in September 2022, my eBay photography station used a 5x6 plywood board, tan cotton blanket, 45-degree angle, Neewer NL660 lights, a phone lanyard, yardstick, lint roller, and fabric shaver. The rule is simple: keep everything within one or two steps so photos stay fast and consistent.
- My photo board was 5 feet by 6 feet, covered with tan cotton fabric, and leaned vertically at about a 45-degree angle.
- When this video went up in September 2022, this setup let me shoot 545 photos in under 45 minutes.
- The whole station fit in about a 5x5 area in my bedroom, with the next items only one or two steps away.
- I used a yardstick in photos because measurements help reduce fit-related returns.
- I shot on a Galaxy S22 in auto mode because speed mattered more than adjusting every photo manually.

If your back hurts from taking eBay photos on the floor, your setup is slowing you down. When I made this video in September 2022, I was using a simple bedroom photo station that let me take 545 clothing photos in under 45 minutes without walking all over the room.
The point was not to build something fancy. The point was to keep the item, lights, phone, measurements, lint roller, and touch-up tools close enough that I could keep moving.
What is the best eBay photography station setup for clothing?
The best eBay photography station for clothing is one that lets you take clean, color-accurate photos without bending over or moving more than a step or two. My setup was a 5x6 plywood board covered with a tan cotton blanket, sitting on a desk and leaning vertically at about a 45-degree angle.
That angle was the big difference for me. Before this, I had taken plenty of photos on the floor, and that gets old fast. If you are doing a lot of listings, your back, neck, and knees are going to feel it. A standing setup puts the garment at a better height and keeps the process repeatable.
I wanted everything in one small area. The more steps you take, the more time you waste. If you have to walk across the room for your lint roller, then look for your phone, then find a measuring stick, then fix lighting, you are not really building a listing system. You are just doing chores in a random order.
Here is the basic station I showed in the video:
| Part of the setup | What I used | Why it helped |
|---|---|---|
| Photo surface | 5x6 plywood board | Big enough for most clothing photos |
| Covering | Tan cotton blanket | Added friction so clothing stayed in place |
| Angle | About 45 degrees against the wall | Easier on my back and neck than floor photos |
| Height | Board sitting on a desk | Kept the work at a comfortable standing height |
| Work area | About 5x5 feet | Let me keep items and tools within one or two steps |
This does not need to be perfect. It just needs to be stable, repeatable, and comfortable enough that you can use it every day.
Why use a 5x6 plywood board for eBay photos?
I used a 5x6 plywood board because it gave me enough space to photograph clothing while keeping the background simple and consistent. Clothing needs room, especially if you are shooting shirts, jackets, pants, or larger sizes.
The board was covered with a tan cotton blanket. The fabric matters more than people think. If the surface is too slick, shirts and pants slide down the board while you are trying to take pictures. That slows you down and gets annoying fast.
Cotton gave the garments enough friction to stay in place. I was not trying to make a magazine set. I was trying to make a photo surface that worked over and over again for eBay listings.
I also placed a small nail at the top of the board with fishing string attached. That helped with polyester fabrics and other slippery pieces that wanted to slide right off the board. If you sell clothing, you already know not every fabric behaves the same. A cotton sweatshirt might sit there fine, while a polyester blouse can move the second you let go.
That small nail and string gave me a quick way to hold certain items without rebuilding the setup.
| Problem | Simple fix I used | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing sliding down | Tan cotton blanket over the board | More friction than a slick backdrop |
| Polyester slipping | Small nail and fishing string | Helped hold slippery garments in place |
| Back pain from floor photos | Board raised on a desk | Let me work standing up |
| Inconsistent photos | Same board every time | Made listings look more uniform |
The biggest lesson is to build around the items you actually sell. Since I was photographing clothing, I needed a vertical surface, friction, and enough room to show the garment clearly.
What lights should you use for an eBay photo station?
I used two Neewer NL660 bi-color LED lights, one on each side, because even lighting and accurate color matter for eBay photos. In the video, I said color accuracy is key for an effective photo station and for keeping returns low.
Bad lighting creates problems. If a shirt looks navy in your photos but black in person, that can become a return. If a jacket looks faded because your light is too warm or too dim, it may sit longer than it should. Your photos do not need to be artistic, but they do need to represent the item clearly.
I set my lights to a cool temperature because that gave me more color-accurate photos in my space. Your room may be different, but the goal is the same: make the garment look as close to real life as possible.
I also had two LED lights attached to the bottom of the Neewer light stands. Those were Andoer 140 RGB lights, and I used them to get more evenly lit photos. The extra lower light helped fill in shadows that can show up when all the light is coming from higher angles.
| Lighting piece | How I used it | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Neewer NL660 LED light | One on each side | Main lighting for the garment |
| Cool temperature setting | Used for my setup | Helped with color accuracy |
| Andoer 140 RGB lights | Attached lower on the light stands | Helped make the photos more evenly lit |
If you are just starting, do not overcomplicate this. You need enough light, placed evenly, so the buyer can see the color, flaws, texture, and details. The better your photos match the real item, the fewer problems you create after the sale.
What accessories make eBay photos faster?
The best accessories for an eBay photo station are the small tools that stop you from leaving the station. For me, that meant a lint roller, yardstick, phone lanyard, and fabric shaver all close by.
None of these are required to take an eBay photo. But they make the whole process smoother. When you are taking hundreds of photos, losing 20 seconds here and 30 seconds there adds up.
I kept a lint roller hooked close by. That way I always knew where it was. If a shirt had lint on it, I did not have to stop and search. I could grab it, roll the item, and keep going.
I also recommend a basic yardstick. In the video, I said most eBay resellers do not include measurements, and that opens the door for more returns because the item did not fit. By adding photos of the measurements to your listings, you are already doing better than a lot of sellers.
A lanyard for my phone was another simple piece that saved time. When the phone was hanging around my neck, I never lost sight of it. It was always right there, ready for the next photo. I also used it when pulling and packing orders.
The fabric shaver was Velcroed nearby. If I noticed a little pilling that I missed while sourcing, I could quickly shave the garment during photo time instead of stopping the whole workflow.
| Accessory | Where it fit in the process | Why I liked it |
|---|---|---|
| Lint roller | Kept hooked close by | Quick cleanup before photos |
| Yardstick | Used for measurement photos | Helps buyers check fit before purchase |
| Phone lanyard | Phone stayed around my neck | Stopped me from misplacing it |
| Fabric shaver | Velcroed near the station | Quick fix for light pilling |
The common theme is simple: keep the tools where your hands can reach them.
Should you include measurements in eBay clothing listings?
Yes, I recommend including measurement photos in eBay clothing listings because fit is one of the biggest reasons clothing gets returned. In my setup, the yardstick was right there so I could add measurements without turning it into a separate task.
For clothing, buyers want to know if the item will fit them. Size tags are not enough. A large in one brand can fit differently than a large in another brand. Pre-owned clothing may also shrink, stretch, or fit differently based on age and style.
When you put the yardstick in the photo, you give the buyer more information before they purchase. That does not guarantee you will never get a return, but it helps remove one easy reason for confusion.
The key is not to make measurements complicated. If the yardstick is already at the station, you can take the measurement photo while the item is already on the board. That is faster than taking all your photos, moving the item somewhere else, measuring it later, and then trying to match everything back up.
This is also where the listing process matters. Once you have the photos, EasyFlip can help write the listing from a few photos so you are not starting from a blank page every time.
Should you use auto mode or pro mode for eBay photos?
I used auto mode on my phone because speed mattered, and the Galaxy S22 auto mode was accurate for my clothing photos. I know that can make photography experts upset, but for eBay reselling, I cared about getting clean, accurate photos quickly.
In the video, I said I did not use pro mode because of the extra time it takes to adjust white balance, focus, brightness, contrast, and other settings. In that same time, I could have already taken more photo sets.
That does not mean pro mode is bad. If auto mode is not working for you, switch to pro mode and fix the issue. But if auto mode is giving you accurate photos, you do not need to slow yourself down just to make the process feel more professional.
I used the Galaxy S22 because the shutter speed was fast and the auto mode matched the garment well in real life. I did not have to wait for the picture to finish before moving on to the next shot, which matters when you are taking hundreds of photos.
| Phone choice | Mode I used | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S22 | Auto mode | Fast shutter and accurate photos in my setup |
| Pro mode | Only if needed | Useful if auto mode is not giving accurate results |
The real test is the photo. If the buyer can clearly see the item, color, flaws, label, measurements, and condition, you are doing the job.
How much space do you need for an eBay photo setup?
You can build an effective eBay photo setup in a small space if everything is organized tightly. My entire station fit in about a 5x5 area in my bedroom.
That matters because a lot of resellers think they need a studio, warehouse, or expensive setup before they can take good photos. You do not. You need a clear system that keeps you from wasting movement.
In my setup, everything happened in that small area. The board was there, the lights were there, the phone was around my neck, the lint roller was nearby, the yardstick was nearby, and the fabric shaver was Velcroed in place. The next items for pictures were only one or two steps away.
That is why I could move fast. The speed did not come from rushing. It came from not having to constantly reset.
When you build your own setup, watch how many times you leave the station. Every time you walk away, ask yourself if that tool or item could live closer. If you keep doing that, the station gets faster without needing to be more expensive.
Do you need an expensive photo station for eBay?
No, you do not need an expensive photo station for eBay; in the video I said you do not need to drop $5,000 to take nice, accurate photos. My point was that a couple hundred dollars could get you on your way to a pro-style eBay photo station.
That was true for the setup I showed in September 2022. Prices on tools can change, and I am not giving current prices here. The reusable lesson is that the system matters more than buying the fanciest version of every item.
Start with the problems you need to solve:
| Problem | What solves it |
|---|---|
| Back hurts from floor photos | Raise the photo surface to standing height |
| Clothing slides around | Use a fabric backdrop with friction |
| Photos look dark or uneven | Add steady lights on both sides |
| Color looks wrong | Adjust lighting temperature or phone settings |
| Measurements slow you down | Keep a yardstick at the station |
| You keep losing your phone | Use a lanyard |
| Pilling shows up during photos | Keep a fabric shaver nearby |
You can improve one piece at a time. The goal is not to impress another reseller. The goal is to make listing easier and reduce the number of reasons a buyer might be confused.

The bottom line
Build your eBay photography station around speed, comfort, and accuracy. Get the photos off the floor, keep the lights even, use a background that holds clothing in place, and keep your phone, measurements, lint roller, and fabric shaver within reach.
This setup was not fancy, but when I made the video in September 2022, it helped me take 545 photos in under 45 minutes. If your current photo process feels slow, fix the station before you blame yourself.
Questions people ask
What do I need for an eBay photography station?
For the setup I showed in September 2022, I used a 5x6 plywood board, tan cotton blanket, lights on both sides, a phone, phone lanyard, yardstick, lint roller, and fabric shaver. The most important part is keeping everything close so you do not waste steps.
Do I need to take eBay photos on the floor?
No. I moved to a raised board leaning at about a 45-degree angle because floor photos can wear out your back and neck. A standing setup is easier to repeat when you are photographing a lot of clothing.
What lights did you use for eBay clothing photos?
In the video, I used two Neewer NL660 bi-color LED lights, one on each side. I also used Andoer 140 RGB lights lower on the stands to help even out the lighting.
Should I use auto mode for eBay photos?
I used auto mode on a Galaxy S22 because it was fast and accurate for my setup. If auto mode does not show the garment accurately in your space, then it makes sense to switch to pro mode and adjust the settings.
Should eBay clothing listings include measurements?
Yes, I recommend adding measurement photos because fit is a common reason for clothing returns. Keeping a yardstick at the photo station makes measurements part of the same photo workflow instead of a separate job.
How much space do I need for an eBay photo station?
My setup fit in about a 5x5 area in my bedroom. The key is not the room size; it is keeping the next items and all your tools within one or two steps.
